1. All Indian nationals – living or working in the 8 districts ( Chitwan, Makawanpur, Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Dhanusha ) of Nepal under the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of India, Birgunj – are advised to register themselves with the Consulate and obtain the Registration Certificate. The Registration Certificate is useful for the following:
The "Registration Certificate" issued by the Consulate is recognized by the Nepali authorities as the proof of Indian citizenship of those persons, who come to Nepal without obtaining an Indian passport. (As per the open border policy between India and Nepal possession of passport is not necessary for visiting/residing in Nepal. Further, no visa is required to be obtained from the Nepalese authorities for such visits/stay).
The Registration Certificate is required by the Nepali authorities for opening bank account, taking mobile phone connection, obtaining driving license etc.
Holding of Registration Certificate is mandatory for study, employment (including self-employment) and engaging in trading and manufacturing activities in Nepal for a period of more than 6 months.
