10th International Day of Yoga celebrations by the Consulate to begin on 16 June 2024

International Day of Yoga 2024 celebrations

The United Nations through a resolution on 11 December 2014 had declared 21st June to be celebrated as International Day of Yoga worldwide.  The draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and endorsed by a record 177 member countries including Nepal. The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

2. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. Yoga is essentially a spiritual discipline which focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. Yoga comprises of variety of techniques consisting of different postures (asanas) and training of mind through breathing techniques and meditation. Continuous practice of yoga can lead human beings to achieve excellent health both physical and mental and further attain self-realisation. Yogic practices have been common in the followers of all religions of ancient India. 9 editions of International Day of Yoga have so far been successfully organized. The yoga over the years has become very popular due to its immense health benefits.

3. The Consulate General of India has organised several curtain raiser yoga events in the run-up to the International Day of Yoga 2024.  The last one curtain raiser yoga event has just been organised today morning, which was exclusively for Women only. Like previous years, the Consulate General of India in partnership with various local govt authorities and organisations would be organizing yoga events at various places as detailed below :

4. The major yoga events will be held in Chitwan on 17 June 2024 at 0530 hrs at Narayani River side (near Chitwan Chamber of Commerce) Bharatpur and  Tirhutiya Gachi Maidan, Janakpurdham on 19 June 2024 at 0530 hrs. The main event of International Day of Yoga  will be held on june 21 ar 05:30 AM at Purano Bus Park, Opposite to Diyalo Lords Hotel in Birgunj. The Birgunj Yoga event is expected to be the bigegest event of yoga being organized by Consulate this year.

5. These events will be free and open to all. Participants may please reach at the venue well in advance.
